Delhi : New Delhi, Sep 06, 2025: A daring theft occurred at a Jain religious event in the Red Fort premises, Delhi, where two golden 'kalash' (urns) and other valuables worth around Rs 1.5 crore were stolen, CCTV footage revealed. The thief, disguised as a Jain priest, managed to escape with the items, prompting an investigation by Delhi Police. Authorities have identified the suspect and assured that an arrest will be made soon.
The stolen items included a large golden 'jhari' and a gold coconut weighing about 760 grams, along with a smaller 115-gram gold 'jhari' encrusted with diamonds, emeralds, and rubies, according to the FIR. These ritual items, used in Jain ceremonies, are considered sacred. Businessman Sudhir Jain, who owns the valuables, brought them daily for rituals.
The incident occurred on Wednesday during the 'Daslakshan Mahaparv,' a 10-day Jain religious festival held at 15 August Park inside the Red Fort. CCTV footage shows the suspect in priest attire carrying a bag, presumably containing the stolen items, and leaving the venue unnoticed. Reports suggest that the thief exploited the crowd while organisers were busy preparing to welcome dignitaries.
Sudhir Jain expressed his distress, stating, “The thief took advantage of the crowd. The gems are just for aesthetics, but the ‘kalash’ is linked to our sentiments. We can’t put a value on such an object.” Puneet Jain, related to Sudhir, added that the suspect had attempted similar thefts at three temples earlier.
The theft has raised serious security concerns at cultural and religious events within historic sites. Delhi Police are actively pursuing leads to recover the sacred items.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was a special guest at the Jain event on Tuesday. The festival, continuing until September 9, is a significant occasion for the Jain community, making the theft not only a financial loss but also a cultural and emotional blow. Authorities have urged organisers to enhance security measures for remaining days of the festival. |
