Kolkata | September 3, 2025 : A passenger aboard IndiGo flight 6E 6571 from Delhi to Kolkata was detained on September 1 after allegedly misbehaving with the cabin crew and disturbing fellow travelers while under the influence of alcohol. The incident has drawn attention once again to the issue of unruly passenger behavior in Indian skies.
According to IndiGo’s official statement released on Wednesday, the individual, reportedly intoxicated, began displaying disruptive conduct mid-flight. The behavior included misbehaving with crew members and inconveniencing co-passengers. Following aviation protocols, the passenger was declared “unruly” by the airline. Upon landing at Kolkata airport, he was handed over to security officials, and a formal complaint was lodged with the relevant authorities.
An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating, “We are aware of an incident of unruly behaviour onboard IndiGo flight 6E 6571 operating from Delhi to Kolkata on 01 September 2025. One of the customers onboard, under the influence of alcohol, was found to be misbehaving with the cabin crew and disturbing fellow passengers. In line with established protocols, the said customer was declared unruly and was handed over to security upon arrival. A formal complaint was also lodged with the relevant authorities.”
Zero-Tolerance Policy
The airline reiterated its strict stance against disruptive conduct. “IndiGo maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of disruptive or abusive conduct and remains committed to ensuring a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all customers and crew,” the airline said.
Airline staff across the industry have repeatedly emphasized that unruly passenger behavior not only compromises the comfort of others onboard but can also pose potential risks to safety in certain situations.
Aviation Protocols and Rules
Indian aviation regulations classify unruly behavior into different categories, ranging from verbal harassment to physical violence. Depending on the severity of the misconduct, offenders can face warnings, temporary flight bans, or even be placed on the “no-fly list.” Misbehavior under the influence of alcohol remains one of the most common triggers of in-flight incidents.
Experts note that while alcohol consumption is not banned on domestic flights, responsible behavior is expected. “Passengers must understand that being intoxicated does not excuse abusive behavior,” said a senior aviation analyst. “Flight attendants are trained to manage such incidents, but repeat cases highlight the need for stricter enforcement.”
Rising Incidents of Disruptive Behavior
In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in reports of unruly passengers on domestic and international routes. Airlines have been pushing for stronger penalties and faster redressal to discourage such misconduct.
For crew members, the priority remains safety. Misbehavior directed at them is treated with utmost seriousness, as it not only affects their working environment but also sets a negative tone for the entire cabin.
Safe Travel Environment
The incident on IndiGo’s Delhi-Kolkata route serves as another reminder of the challenges faced by airlines in maintaining order in the skies. With growing passenger traffic across India, airlines stress that cooperation and mutual respect are essential for a smooth travel experience.
As investigations proceed, authorities are expected to review the case and determine further action against the passenger. Meanwhile, IndiGo has reaffirmed its stance that unruly conduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
