July 28, 2025 | Chennai : In a historic tribute to one of India’s greatest maritime emperors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday unveiled a ₹1,000 commemorative coin marking the 1,000th anniversary of Emperor Rajendra Chola I’s legendary naval expedition. The event took place in Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the ancient capital established by the Chola ruler after his victorious campaign.

The coin, a numismatic salute to India's naval history, features a striking engraving of the emperor on horseback, with a majestic ship in the background — symbolizing Rajendra Chola’s maritime prowess and long-range expeditions across Southeast Asia, particularly to modern-day Indonesia and Malaysia.

A Grassroots Proposal Becomes National Tribute
The initiative for the coin’s release came from R. Komagan, chairman of the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust, who not only proposed the idea to the Centre but also submitted a detailed coin design. The proposal was accepted by the government, culminating in the coin’s official launch by the Prime Minister.

The event was attended by Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar, and VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, who received the commemorative coin during the ceremony. Their presence underscored the cultural and political significance of the moment, especially for Tamil Nadu, where the Chola dynasty holds immense historical pride.

A Naval Empire Remembered
Rajendra Chola I, son of the illustrious Rajaraja Chola I, was not only a formidable ruler on land but also a pioneer in naval power. His seaborne campaigns in the 11th century established India’s influence over parts of Southeast Asia, making the Chola dynasty one of the earliest examples of Indian naval supremacy.

By releasing this coin, the Indian government aims to celebrate and educate people about India’s maritime heritage, long before the age of European exploration. PM Modi has often invoked the achievements of ancient Indian empires in his speeches, and this gesture aligns with his broader emphasis on reclaiming historical pride and civilizational confidence.

Symbolism Beyond Metal
This coin is more than a commemorative artifact; it is a symbol of India’s enduring maritime legacy and a tribute to the Chola dynasty’s vision, administration, and cultural diplomacy. It also highlights the importance of public participation in preserving and promoting regional history, as seen in R. Komagan’s grassroots initiative.

As India navigates the modern Indo-Pacific order, Rajendra Chola I’s naval legacy serves as a timely reminder of its ancient command over the seas, not just as conquerors, but as cultural ambassadors who spread art, architecture, and governance across shores.
