Ahmedabad, August 26, 2025:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated India’s resilience in the face of rising economic pressures from the United States, as a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods is set to take effect from August 27. Speaking at a public address in Ahmedabad, Modi assured citizens that India would find a way forward regardless of Washington’s punitive measures.

“No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it. Today, the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan is getting a lot of energy from Gujarat, backed by two decades of hard work,” the Prime Minister said, emphasizing India’s focus on self-reliance and economic resilience.

The announcement comes hours after the Trump administration issued an official notice imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, effectively raising the overall levy to 50 per cent. The punitive duties are in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil and are part of broader protectionist measures.

Without directly naming the United States, PM Modi criticized the global trend of economic self-interest, stating, “Today we are all seeing policies based on economic selfishness in the world.” His remarks highlighted India’s determination to safeguard national interests amid international pressures.

Addressing small entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, farmers, and livestock rearers, Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable sectors. “From the land of Gandhi, I promise again and again: for Modi, your interests are paramount. My government will never let small entrepreneurs, cattle rearers, or farmers suffer any harm,” he declared. This message aligns with his long-standing push for self-reliance and support for domestic industries, as emphasized in his Independence Day speech earlier this year.

The US tariff has disrupted ongoing trade dialogues and cast doubt on the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) expected between India and the United States around September–October. President Donald Trump, on Truth Social, described India as a friend but criticized its trade barriers and tariffs, stating that US-India business had been limited due to “strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers.”

Despite these tensions, India continues to pursue parallel trade negotiations with the UK, EU, EFTA, and ASEAN. New Delhi is also working to strengthen energy ties and maintain strategic engagement with Capitol Hill, aiming to balance short-term trade frictions with long-term US relations.

Analysts note that the 50 per cent tariff could impact sectors heavily reliant on exports to the US. However, the Modi government’s emphasis on self-reliance, domestic production, and protection of small businesses and farmers is designed to cushion the economic impact.

PM Modi’s remarks underscore India’s steadfast approach in navigating global trade challenges. With the tariffs taking effect tomorrow, the government’s message is clear: India will endure economic pressures, prioritize its citizens, and continue to strengthen its domestic economy, demonstrating resilience and strategic foresight in international trade. India Stands Strong Against 50% US Tariffs

Ahead of the 50% US tariff effective tomorrow, PM Modi reassures India: we will endure and find a way forward. Speaking from Ahmedabad, he emphasized protecting small entrepreneurs, farmers, shopkeepers, and livestock rearers while strengthening the nation’s self-reliance. “No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it,” Modi said, highlighting India’s resilience in a world driven by economic self-interest. A message of confidence and unity as India faces global trade challenges head-on!
