Delhi : New Delhi, August 26, 2025:
As the United States moves to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday assured the nation that India will withstand economic pressures while continuing to strengthen its resilience. The new duties, announced by the US Department of Homeland Security, are set to come into effect at 12:01 am Eastern Daylight Time on August 27.
The US notice cited concerns about "threats to the United States by the Government of the Russian Federation" and indicated that India would face punitive duties as part of this policy. The measures come after President Donald Trump previously doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, particularly in response to India’s import of Russian crude oil. The move has added strain to India-US relations, which have seen increasing tensions over trade and geopolitical interests.
Speaking at a public rally in Ahmedabad’s Nikol area, PM Modi emphasized that India’s economic strategy is rooted in resilience and self-reliance. “No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it,” he said. The Prime Minister reassured citizens that his government would continue to protect the interests of small entrepreneurs, farmers, and livestock rearers, groups that he described as the backbone of India’s economy.
In a subtle reference to the US tariffs, Modi highlighted the global trend of economic self-interest. “Aaj duniya me arthik swarth wali rajniti hai, sab koi apna karne me lage hain. Usse hum bhali bhanti dekh rahe hain,” he said, underscoring India’s observation of the changing dynamics of international trade and diplomacy.
Drawing inspiration from Gandhi’s legacy, the Prime Minister added, “From the soil of Ahmedabad, I wish to tell you, promise you from the land of Gandhi, that the interests of small entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, farmers, and livestock rearers are of utmost priority for Modi… Dabav kitna hi kyun na aaye, hum jhelne ki apni takat badhate jayenge.” The remarks reflect India’s commitment to bolstering its economic foundations even amid external pressures.
Economic analysts say the US tariffs could have a significant impact on India’s exports, particularly in sectors reliant on raw materials and manufactured goods destined for the American market. However, the Modi government has been pushing initiatives to strengthen domestic production, diversify trading partners, and invest in local entrepreneurship to mitigate the effects of trade disruptions.
India’s message, as articulated by PM Modi, is one of confidence and measured defiance. With the new US duties imminent, the focus for Indian policymakers will be on safeguarding domestic businesses, encouraging innovation, and sustaining the nation’s growth trajectory despite international pressures.
As the countdown to the August 27 tariff hike continues, all eyes will be on India’s economic and diplomatic response, signaling a nation determined to navigate global challenges while maintaining internal stability.
