New Delhi, July 19 : A new study has found that something as simple as eating eggs regularly could lower the risk of Alzheimer’s dementia by almost 50%. Researchers tracked more than 1,000 older adults over a span of seven years and found that those who ate more than one egg per week were significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. It gradually affects memory, thinking, and the ability to perform daily tasks. According to experts, some people may also experience other types of dementia alongside Alzheimer's, such as vascular dementia.

The study, titled “Association of Egg Intake with Alzheimer's Dementia Risk in Older Adults,” was part of the Rush Memory and Aging Project. Participants had an average age of 81 and were initially free from dementia. Over seven years, 280 of them developed Alzheimer’s. However, people who ate more than one egg per week showed about 50% lower risk compared to those who consumed fewer eggs.

Why eggs?
The key ingredient here is choline, a nutrient found in large amounts in eggs, especially the yolk. Choline supports brain function, mood regulation, and even fat metabolism. The body can make small amounts of choline on its own, but most of it needs to come from food.

Top food sources of choline include:

Eggs (especially the yolk)
Fish like salmon and tuna
Chicken and turkey
Milk and dairy products

To further understand the connection between egg consumption and brain health, the researchers also performed autopsies on 578 brains from deceased participants. They found that people who ate eggs frequently had:

Fewer amyloid plaques, which are protein clumps associated with Alzheimer’s

Fewer neurofibrillary tangles, which are twisted fibers that disrupt brain cell function

The Bottom Line
According to researchers, eating eggs more than once a week may help protect the brain and lower the chances of developing Alzheimer’s. The benefit seems to come from choline, which supports many brain functions and reduces inflammation.

As the world continues to look for simple ways to support long-term brain health, eggs are shaping up to be an easy, affordable, and nutritious addition to your diet.
