कियोंझर (ओडिशा) :
Keonjhar (Odisha), July 12 — A tragic incident has shaken Keonjhar town in Odisha, where a 20-year-old BBA student was found dead in her private hostel on Thursday morning. Initial reports suggest that the young woman may have died by suicide, and authorities are investigating the matter.
The student, who was in her second year of studies at a university in Keonjhar, was originally from a village in the Joda block of the district. Her body was discovered hanging from a staircase railing inside the hostel, with a scarf used as the noose. Hostel staff alerted the police immediately upon making the discovery.
Police officials have confirmed that preliminary evidence points toward suicide. Medicines related to mental health treatment were found in the student’s belongings, indicating she may have been battling emotional or psychological distress. Her body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Investigators are also checking her mobile phone and speaking with her friends and family to gather more information about her recent behaviour and mental state.
The incident has sparked serious concerns about the safety and regulation of private hostels in the region. Many such hostels reportedly operate without proper registration, supervision, or even basic safety features such as wardens or emergency response systems. Local authorities have vowed to review the licensing and monitoring processes of private student accommodations.
Students and residents of Keonjhar have expressed shock and grief over the young woman’s death. Some classmates noted that she was quiet and kept to herself, and few suspected she was going through a personal crisis. Her death has raised urgent calls for greater mental health support for college students, especially those staying away from their families in private hostels.
Mental health experts say that young students often face high academic pressure, anxiety about the future, and social isolation—particularly in demanding courses like business administration. Without proper access to counselling or mental wellness programs, many may suffer silently. Professionals are urging colleges and universities to implement regular mental health screenings, peer support networks, and trained counsellors to prevent such tragedies.
Police officials say no foul play is suspected at this stage, but they are investigating all possible angles. They also plan to submit a report to district education officials recommending stricter guidelines for hostels operating in and around college campuses.
The student’s family has reached Keonjhar and is cooperating with authorities during the investigation. In a brief statement, they asked for privacy as they mourn their loss. Friends, classmates, and teachers gathered at the hostel to pay their respects and hold a small candlelight tribute.
As authorities continue their probe, the case has highlighted the urgent need to improve mental health awareness, enforce hostel regulations, and ensure the emotional safety of students across educational institutions.
