New Delhi (Life Style Desk) July 12 - When you check into a hotel, everything might seem perfect. But behind the friendly smiles and clean sheets, there are some things hotel staff may not openly tell you, especially about your room’s safety and how to get a better stay experience. Here’s what to know, in simple terms, and what you can do to stay safer and more comfortable.

1. You May Not Get the Best Room Automatically
Hotels don’t always assign their best rooms to every guest. If you booked using a discount or app, you might be given one of the simpler rooms by default. However, if you politely ask for an upgrade at check-in, especially during quiet hours or midweek, you might be surprised. There’s a good chance the staff will offer you a better room with a nicer view if it's available.

2. The In-Room Safe Isn’t Really Safe
The small safe inside your room might seem like a good place for your passport, jewellery or cash. But here’s the truth: hotel staff have master codes or keys for everything, including the safe. If you truly want to protect your valuables, ask the front desk if you can store them in the hotel’s main safe. They usually keep it behind the counter and can give you a written receipt for added peace of mind.

3. Watch Out for Hidden Cameras
Most hotels have CCTV cameras in public areas for safety. But in rare and unfortunate cases, hidden cameras can be found in guest rooms. They may be hidden in alarm clocks, smoke detectors, or even decoration pieces like photo frames or flower vases. To be safe, use your phone’s flashlight to look for a camera lens reflection, or use an infrared camera detector to scan the room.

4. Your Room Door Might Not Be Fully Secure
Even if you lock your door from the inside, staff members can usually open it with a master key. While most hotel workers are honest, it’s always smart to use all available locks on the door—such as the latch, chain, or deadbolt. Some travelers also use a portable door lock or wedge for extra protection at night.

5. Early Check-In and Kindness May Bring Perks
Checking in early won’t always get you a better room, but if the hotel isn’t busy, it might work in your favor. And politeness goes a long way. Friendly guests often get unexpected benefits like room upgrades, free desserts, ironing access, or help with transport. Don’t be afraid to ask about free shuttle services or local area guidance, they might just offer it without charge.

Final Thoughts
Most hotel staff do their best to ensure guests have a pleasant stay, but it’s still important to be alert and informed. With a few simple precautions and polite requests, you can make your trip more secure and maybe even more luxurious.
