Tokyo | July 1, 2025 : Japan has just experienced its hottest June in over 127 years, with the average temperature hitting 23.4°C (74.1°F), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). This figure is 1.6°C higher than the usual average, making it the warmest June since records began in 1898.

The extreme heat has raised alarms among scientists and government officials, who say this is another clear sign of ongoing climate change. Major cities like Tokyo and Osaka recorded temperatures above 35°C (95°F) during mid-June - temperatures normally seen in the peak of summer.

Climate experts are calling this more than just a heatwave. “This is a signal of long-term climate change,” said Hiroshi Nakamura, a senior researcher at the JMA. “These high temperatures are arriving earlier each year, and they’re staying longer.”

The impact on daily life has been significant. Over 2,000 people in Tokyo alone were treated for heatstroke in June, with hospitals reporting a sharp increase in emergency visits. Schools reduced outdoor activities, and many companies allowed flexible work hours to protect employees from the harsh weather.

The farming sector has also taken a hit. Farmers in Kyoto and other rural areas are struggling with dry soil and early crop damage. “We’re watering more, but the heat is drying things faster than usual,” said a local rice farmer.

Meanwhile, the demand for electricity has surged. Air conditioners are running almost non-stop in homes and offices, pushing power usage close to record levels. The government has asked people to conserve energy where possible to avoid blackouts in the coming months.

Japan’s heatwave is part of a wider global trend. Countries like India, the United States, and several parts of Europe have also seen early and severe heatwaves this year. Scientists link this to rising greenhouse gas emissions and environmental damage caused by human activities.

UN climate experts are urging stronger global action. “What’s happening in Japan today could be tomorrow’s reality for many more nations,” warned Dr. Lina Chen, a climate advisor in Geneva. She stressed the need for serious efforts to reduce carbon emissions and invest in sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, the JMA has warned of more extreme weather this summer, including heatwaves, typhoons, and heavy rainfall. The government is preparing emergency shelters and relief plans to deal with possible crises.

Japan’s record-breaking June serves as a stark reminder: climate change is no longer a distant issue - it is here, and it’s heating up fast.
